We've been having a lot of fun lately around Grant Campground. First was our Christmas celebration. You see, all Yellowstone employees celebrate Christmas on August 25. The reason? Well, the story we tell our visitors is about a group of tourists who got trapped in the Old Faithful Inn due to a snow storm on August 25 way back in the early 1900's. These tourist made the best of a bad situation by singing Christmas carols and enjoying a holiday feast. And this tradition has continued all these years.
Is this true? Between you and me, I'd say not likely. However, it is a great opportunity to share good times with our Yellowstone family. I have found that working and living with folks for a few months can create a close bond, and it really does seem like family.
So, on August 25, we had a delicious Christmas dinner with turkey (compliments of Chef Bill), dressing, and all the trimmings, including the best pecan pie I had ever eaten. One of the qualification required to work in a campground is the ability to cook. Not really, but it sure seems that way.
Continuing the Christmas tradition, we all got back together after the office closed at 9:00 p.m. to exchange gifts. This is when the party begins! What a great time we all had with lots of fun and laughter. We finally headed home around 11:00 p.m. I was so glad I didn't have to open up the office the next morning.
Now for the happy birthday....August 26 was my birthday. Bill and I had decided we would celebrate at a later date, having just eaten like pigs over Christmas. We worked the evening shift, and when we came back from dinner, my co-workers had a birthday cake glowing with candles, lots of candles, for me. I was so surprised! It was even homemade! They could have left off some of the candles...when I blew them out, I was afraid all of the smoke was going to set off the smoke detector. Now, that would have been a little embarrassing!!
As you can see, the past couple of days have been great! We work with the best group of folks!! Before you know it, we will close the campground and head our separate ways. I'm beginning to hear the important question going around, "are you coming back next year?" Of course, it is too early for anyone to commit, but at least they are thinking about it. We've had an awesome two years...I have to wonder how long it can continue.
