We went out again on Friday morning, and saw the road to Lake Butte had been plowed, so we drove up to the overlook. This has to be one of my favorite places in the park. The views are spectacular, and today it was so quite. Since Yellowstone isn't opened completely, there are very few visitors. We are so fortunate to be here now and to enjoy the park before things get crazy.
Here is the view from Lake Butte. As you can see, Yellowstone Lake is still frozen. And this morning there was a fog lying on the frozen lake. I had never seen anything like this before. The lake appeared to be covered in a cloud.
And here is an island in the middle of the lake. Again, you can see the fog hovering on the frozen lake.
We haven't come across many animals. Yesterday we did see an otter occasionally poking his head out of a hole in the frozen lake. And not too far from the otter sat a bald eagle...just waiting to take the otter's fish. It was too far away to get pictures, but what fun it was to watch them through our binoculars. This afternoon after work, we took a drive through Hayden Valley. Not too much going on this time of year, but we did see this coyote. We stopped in a pull-out and watched him through our binoculars. He was "mousing," and a lot of fun to watch. After a while, he decided to have a seat. He was really too far away for a decent picture, but I gave it my best shot.

So, now that we've moved down to the lake area of Yellowstone, it really does feel like we are home. Our friends are beginning to arrive, and rumor has it a hotdog potluck has already been planned for tomorrow afternoon. Oh, it's so good to be back!
P.S. Steve, this post is for you!! It was 11 degrees yesterday, and the Arctic Fox did great!
