Wolves!

On Friday, more park roads opened. We could now get from Mammoth to West Yellowstone and to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. Yesterday afternoon was our first chance to get back into the park, and we decided to go check out Artist Point at the Canyon.

We were heading from Norris to Canyon, came around a curve, and saw two cars stopped up ahead. I assumed it must be a bear. But no...it was a pack of wolves!! We have seen a single wolf a time or two but never a pack. There were four of them.

Based on information I found on-line, and based on conversations I had today at work, I think this is the Canyon Pack (or Canyon Group). The pack consists of one black male, two silver males, and one white female. Bill and I both got some great photos, and I was able to get some video as well.

Many park visitors often mistake a coyote for a wolf. After seeing these wolves up close & personal, I don't think I could ever make that mistake again. These wolves are huge, especially the males.

If I don't see another animal this entire season, this wolf sighting will be enough to make me happy.

After our wolf encounter, we continued on to the Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. The popular viewpoint, Artist Point, remains blocked by snow, but we were still able to get some good shots.

This year is the earliest we have been in the park. And so far, we are enjoying it! Who knows, one day we may get brave and spend the entire winter in Yellowstone.
